Now, after she made her pitch at the VFW hall, attendees clamored around Widell, eager to have her manage their Airbnb rentals. The reign of the Airbnb Queen of Tulsa was over — and her subjects were left to pick up the pieces. Dominic Bugatto for BIThe "Queen of Airbnb" label, which started off as Widell's Airbnb account name, helped create an aura of omnipotence. According to those familiar with the business, Widell seemed to be shifting her focus away from Airbnb rentals to the house-staging business. Today, her "Tulsa Airbnb Group" on Facebook remains active, with some 1,000 members.

Former Twitter executives including CEO Parag Agrawal, Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal, head of legal Vijaya Gadde and General Counsel Sean Edgett filed a new lawsuit against Elon Musk and X Corp. in federal court arguing that they are owed $128 million in unpaid severance. The ex-Twitter executives' lawyers argue, "These statements were not the mere rantings of a self-centered billionaire surrounded by enablers unwilling to confront him with the legal consequences of his own choices. Musk bragged to Isaacson specifically how he planned to cheat Twitter's executives out of their severance benefits in order to save himself $200 million." The suit, Agrawal et al v. Musk et al, was filed in California's Northern District and follows news that settlement talks between X Corp. and ex-Twitter managers broke down in a related case in Delaware, Woodfield v. Twitter Inc., where $500 million in unpaid severance to former Twitter managers and engineers is in dispute. Representatives for X Corp. and Elon Musk did not immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment.

An Airbnb landlord said a tenant stopped paying rent and battled to make her leave. It took 570 days of legal back-and-forth, roughly $60,000 in unpaid rent, and a police escort before Elizabeth Hirschhorn finally left the property on Friday, Sebastian Rucci, an attorney for Jovanovic, told Insider. Within an hour of watching Hirschhorn drive away, per Rucci's motion to dismiss the eviction suit against Hirschhorn, Jovanovic changed the locks. The Times reported Jovanovic offered to pay for Hirschhorn to stay in a hotel while the repairs were completed, but she declined. Hirschhorn had refused to relocate unless Jovanovic paid her $100,000, the Times reported, citing a settlement offer the outlet reviewed.

If you have all or most of your money in a single investment account, you're missing opportunities to build wealth. If you're serious about building wealth, there are seven types of accounts you need to have to make it happen. If you're making estimated quarterly tax payments, you'll need to accumulate funds in your tax savings account as you earn them. Note that a "tax savings account" is not a different banking product — it's just a designated use for a savings account, like an emergency fund would be. (Like the tax savings account, this isn't a different product your bank offers — it's a specific use for an account like a high-yield savings account.)

The nurse practitioner on duty that day was employed by Corizon Health, Inc., one of the nation's largest private prison healthcare providers. Triller's preliminary S-1 filing to go public on the New York Stock Exchange has been released. The company reported a smaller net loss in 2022 than in 2021 and around $48 million in 2022 revenue. In its S-1, the company featured images of celebrities like Jennifer Lopez and DJ Khaled inside Triller products. One metric notably absent from Triller's S-1 is active user counts across its platforms. In its S-1, the company wrote it had "established more than 550 million user accounts" across its offerings, which it defined as anyone who created an account.

Stephanie Pullman, 72, died after her power was shut off over a $51 late bill. Pullman's death in 2018 led to changes in how power companies deal with overdue bills in the summer. A recent heatwave in Arizona has the governor asking power companies to put policies in writing. The medical examiner's office said Pullman died from "environmental heat exposure " combined with cardiovascular disease after the shutoff. Electric utilities can choose to pause disconnections from June 1 through October 15 or pause them on days forecasted to be above 95 degrees Fahrenheit or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

New York CNN —Extreme heat in the summer has become America’s brutal new reality. It would also include building code changes that require multi-family homes provide cooling the same way they do heating. Heat waves and mirage create an impressionistic scene on Sierra Highway during a scorching day on Saturday, July 15, 2023. Cities are warmer than their surrounding areas, a phenomenon known as the urban heat island effect, and they need to be better designed to keep people cool, researchers say. They were designed 40 years ago when summer temperatures were much cooler,” Mark Wolfe said.

Despite the growing concern of heat-related illnesses and climate change, people have far fewer protections from power shutoffs during the summer than they do in the winter. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, known as LIHEAP, has about $6 billion in funds for fiscal 2023, which runs through September. The association is calling on Congress to provide an additional $3 billion for cooling assistance this summer, which would help about 6 million households. And it is asking utilities to voluntarily suspend shutoffs this summer for those behind on their bills. Florida Power & Light, for instance, has a longstanding policy that it won’t disconnect customers if it’s 95 degrees or higher.

Over 30 prominent human rights activists in China saw their accounts hidden from search, per the NYT. Twitter's automated filter for spam and misinformation mistakenly restricted the activists, the Times said. Twitter's staff has been cut by around two-thirds since Elon Musk took over last October. Twitter's automated system intended to filter out spam and disinformation campaigns from governments mistakenly restricted the Chinese activists as well, four people with knowledge of the system told the Times. The Times also reports that Twitter's top staffer in the Asia-Pacific region, who had oversight of handling Chinese activist accounts, was laid-off early this year.
Bridgewater Associates co-CIO Ray Dalio has slammed the US debt limit as "a farce". "It works like a bunch of alcoholics who write laws to enforce drinking limits," he said. "We all know that there is no real debt limit because what is called a debt limit never actually limits the debt," the Bridgewater Associates CIO wrote in a LinkedIn post published Wednesday. Congress has acted 78 separate times to extend the debt limit since 1960, according to the Treasury Department. A US debt default or even a near-nonpayment could send the US economy into recession, says Goldman Sachs' top economist. Any doubts on the US government's ability to pay back its debt could have "very adverse consequences," he said. The US has reached the $31.4 trillion borrowing limit, forcing the Treasury to step in with "extraordinary measures." The prospect of a longer-term solution remains clouded amid continued political wrangling over how much more money the government can borrow to meet its payments. If the US escapes risks of defaulting on its debt, it's likely to avoid a recession, Hatzius said, maintaining the house view.
Biden administration unveils rent protections
  + stars: | 2023-01-25 | by ( Anna Bahney | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Washington, DC CNN —In response to rent payments soaring across the country in recent years, the Biden administration unveiled new actions Wednesday to protect tenants, make renting more affordable and improve fairness in the rental housing market. The agencies involved include the Federal Trade Commission, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Justice. The FHFA will initiate a process to examine limits on egregious rent increases and proposals for renter protections for future investments. The administration also set out its guiding principles in its “Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights,” which, while not enforceable, aims to underscore protections the administration says every renter deserves. Meanwhile, others in the housing industry say that this kind of federal involvement in housing policy serves to increase housing costs.
The Biden administration announced several new protections for renters on January 25. At the same time, the Federal Housing Finance Agency, an independent organization that helps regulate the mortgage market, will create new policies that encourage development of affordable-rental units. Insider reviewed the documents the White House released concerning the new initiatives. The idea comes as many renters continue to organize in order to combat what they see as unwarranted rent increases and evictions. Some home builders like Jerry Konter, the chairman of the National Association of Home Builders, disagreed with the new protections for renters.
Twitter faces legal action from the Crown Estate, which manages properties owned by King Charles III. Insider understands that the estate has begun legal proceedings against Twitter over its London offices. King Charles is the ultimately owner of the estate, though has little day-to-day involvement. In December 2022, The New York Times reported that Twitter hadn't paid rent on any of its offices for weeks. The Crown Estate manages $19.2 billion worth of properties including 241 in central London, according to its most recent annual report.
